The Crumpled Series is art created by crumpling paper and letting the random patterns determine the final piece.
This design jumped out at me almost immediately as something nautical. A clown or puffer fish? It told me it was yellow, right? And it would have to let the world know it might be dangerous, so the red stripe was necessary. But, that little window, yep, submarine.

It’s all experimental, this process of making art based on crumple patterns. This one, though, surprised me when the marker lines disappeared with the watered down paint. It was a runny exciting mess.
The process starts with crumpled paper, in this case, an 18” x 23” sheet of Strathmore drawing paper. The lines follow the random patterns made by the crumpling of the paper, and inform the direction of the final piece.

The lines are transferred to canvas and finished in acrylic.

I don’t approach the piece with a concept, but instead allow the pattern to inspire me. These patterns inspired the koi fish, for me, which is the color scheme I finished the canvas in. You might see something different.

This piece was made by crumpling a thin brown paper. It not only created a great crumple pattern, but received the acrylic medium very well.
Since these pieces aren’t predetermined, about halfway through my confidence faltered. My paint spread more than I anticipated, causing a lot of bleed over the lines. I stressed for a minute, than thought, “What the heck, I’ll just Bob Ross it, happy mistake”.
That’s part of the process, though, so I pressed through and was very satisfied with the finished piece.
