Crumpled Series: Volcano by Armando Heredia Acrylic on Paper | 23″ x 23″ Original For Sale $2,500. Contact the artist.
This piece was made by crumpling a thin brown paper. It not only created a great crumple pattern, but received the acrylic medium very well.
Since these pieces aren’t predetermined, about halfway through my confidence faltered. My paint spread more than I anticipated, causing a lot of bleed over the lines. I stressed for a minute, than thought, “What the heck, I’ll just Bob Ross it, happy mistake”.
That’s part of the process, though, so I pressed through and was very satisfied with the finished piece.
It’s true, one of the most important pursuits in my life at the moment is to convince the world that crumpled paper has artistic merit! Truthfully, though, this series of work is really based on the idea that if we are grateful and look at the world with wonder, we can find beauty in the random patterns all around us. My sons have been fans of Ancient Aliens, so as the head piece started to come together while I traced the patterns, I thought immediately of an alien queen. Once I brought it into Adobe Illustrator, the colors picked themselves.
Crumpled paper is the common denominator in all of the pieces in this series, but the random patterns give the flexibility to go in many different directions. I used a metallic bronze paint on the robe of this royal character. In the next iteration, a larger painting or possibly a sculpture, I hope to use gold leaf.
The original painting is for sale and you can purchase prints on my FineArtAmerica.com page.
Update: The piece is now framed and ready to go to a forever home.

The Raincoat and the Volcano is part of the Crumpled Series. Each piece in this series starts with a crumpled piece of paper. The patterns created from the crumple are interpreted into a one of a kind image. The line art from this crumple reminded me of a child riding a bicycle. As a young boy, I spent many rainy afternoons riding around the streets of my small town. I always wanted one of those bright yellow raincoats to wear on those deep blue days. Now I have one.
This piece kind of struck a chord in me. There’s something about that big blue space, almost melancholy, but serene in it’s own simple way, that really moves me. It was a different feel for me, also, to be so simplistic and I had to almost force myself to push the design down into that small area in the corner. The overall piece doesn’t feel forced to me, though. It feels just right.

Crumpling of paper seems like the end, but for this series of art, crumpled paper is actually the beginning. The folds and patterns are interpreted in ink directly onto the crumpled paper.
The image is then photographed with my iPhone and edited in the photo editor, cropped and then dropped into my Adobe Creative Cloud. Originally, I titled the drawing “Stag”because it reminded me of some kind of antlered creature, with a lot of swagger.
The pixel image is brought into Adobe Illustrator and converted into a vector file. This gives me the ability to experiment with an endless variety of colors and textures to help develop the idea that will become a finished piece. The title of this design became, “Denim and Bones” after I explored the color possibilities and realized the “legs” were actually laid out like a pair of blue jeans and I transferred the concept to canvas using a small video projector
Here the image is complete, in itself, but it is also the seed that becomes another painting, sculpture, 3D print or some other type of fine art piece.
I was really excited to take the concept to a larger scale and so I went to the local Goodwill to purchase and upcycle a used canvas, and I found one with a great background already painted on it. So, “Denim and Bones” became Celestial.
As exciting as it was to take the concept to 36” x 48”, what was even more exciting was working through the process again to bring the photo of the finished acrylic painting back into Adobe Illustrator, and converting it back into the vector illustration format, which is the latest iteration of the concept. You can purchase a print of each of these phases of the Denim and Bones artwork by visiting my FineArtAmerica.com page.
Profile is part of the Crumpled Series. The piece was created by interpreting the patterns made by crumpling a stiff card stock paper. The line art was scanned and developed in a digital format.
The piece was a challenge, because the orientation of the design changes the meaning, to me. The Profile was idea that the spoke the strongest.
The Crumpled Series is a collection of works created by interpreting the random patterns made by crumpling paper. The Blue Roan is inspired by a Western story, “Out of the Wilderness” by Max Brand.

Denim and Bones was created by interpreting the random patterns of crumpled paper. Bold orange backs the abstract shape of an antlered skull sitting on the blues of denim.
This is an acrylic painting based on the color scheme I developed using Adobe Illustrator.
